Our consumer unit replacement service in Talke swaps an old fuse box for a modern board with RCD and surge protection. Every board is tested, certified and registered for you.

Rewireable fuses, a plastic board with no RCDs, a wooden back panel or scorch marks are all signs. So is a board that keeps tripping for no clear reason, or one with no spare space for a new circuit such as an EV charger, electric shower or garden room.
New consumer units have RCD protection, which cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth. RCBOs protect each circuit on its own, so one fault does not switch off the whole house. Most new boards also include surge protection.
Most consumer unit replacements take half a day to a full day. The power is off for most of that time, so we agree a start time with you. Afterwards, every circuit is labelled, and you get a certificate and building control registration.
Before we quote, we look at your existing board, the earthing and the wiring around it. This tells us what size of unit you need and whether anything else, such as main bonding to the gas and water pipes, needs bringing up to standard first.
On the day, we switch off the supply, test each circuit, remove the old board and fit the new one in a non-combustible enclosure. Each circuit is connected, labelled and tested. If a hidden fault shows up, we explain it and agree the fix with you before we carry on.
Tell us what you need or what has gone wrong. We aim to respond the same day across Stoke-on-Trent.
We look at the job, explain what needs doing and give you a free quote before any work starts.
We finish the job, test everything we have worked on and hand over the certificate for your records.
Yes. Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England. As an NICEIC Approved Contractor, we register the job for you, and you receive a compliance certificate in the post as well as our Electrical Installation Certificate.
Since 2016, the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to be made of non-combustible material, which usually means steel. This was introduced because of fires that started in plastic boards. A metal enclosure helps contain a fire if a connection inside ever overheats.
The main things are the number of circuits, whether you want RCBOs on every circuit, the condition of your earthing and bonding, and any faults found during testing. We look at the existing board first and give you a free quote covering everything the job needs.
Usually, yes, as long as it tests safely. New RCDs are more sensitive than old fuses, so they can reveal faults that were hidden before. If testing shows a circuit is in poor condition, we explain the options, which may include a partial rewire of that circuit.
